This is a continuation of the severe weather warning I began earlier last week – sharing global trends related to forced displacement. The sobering forecast predicting severe weather cannot be ignored as nations and the international community consider how to navigate what’s coming.
7. Refugees and asylum seekers are increasingly weaponized by their host countries. Consider how Turkey has repeatedly threatened to release its refugees to the EU unless the EU continues to pay Turkey billions of Euros. In May of 2016, Kenya threatened to close its refugee camps. When the EU protested, Kenyan officials told them that they could perhaps be more helpful in bearing the burden of hosting refugees. Mexico has had similar exchanges with US officials. The refugees find themselves being used as pawns in international politics – but all they seek is safety and place.
8. Major new humanitarian crises are surfacing. Venezuela has seen millions flee as the state collapses and the government grows increasingly oppressive. Turkey’s war with the Kurds in Syria has rekindled the regional conflict. Meanwhile protests in Iraq, Hong Kong, Chile and Iran are ramping up.
9. Due to the 8 trends listed in this forecast, forcibly displaced people are becoming more desperate. Hopelessness is taking root. Suicide rates are rising. Their backs are against the wall. Millions of displaced children are growing up in a world that has discarded them as worthless – or worse, labeled them to be a threat to their way of life. Unless something changes soon and the world begins to demonstrate that we care about their welfare, they are likely to become easy prey for those who would radicalize them. For they have nothing to lose.
These are the primary 9 indicators behind this Severe Weather Warning ⚠️
